quite a few people use shimano mt3 shoes, even in winter, but the major drawback is they dont keep feet warm so probably a good choice fpr summer rasa.
I have had a few successful rides on a couple of different shoes. One was the Pearl Izumi X-Alp Summit that was pretty true to size and had very good walking and climbing grip.
The '22 RASA was done with Fizik's Terra X2 Ergolace and I was extremely impressed at how well they held up. Very comfortable walking shoe. The only downside was that the laces did come undone at time when walking through tall grass (Mordor).
Just remember to order one size up from your normal shoe size when you plan to order these.
Shimano XM9’s are bullet proof. They will not fall apart but are heavy. Gortex keeps you warm but sections that get them wet (Umko Crossing, Osseberg and Stettyns) mean they take ages to dry. Not the racers choice. Other shoes I’ve used Pearl Izumi XAlp’s, durable and very suitable for the summer events, but feet will get cold on RASA, boas may be an issue (laces are best IMHO). Shimano MT5’s or any of the MT range also good. Only problem I’ve had was a sole completely delaminating on a one of a pair of Lake MXZ200’s. But I think they have a design flaw requiring a section of sole to be removed to fit cleats, destroying the integrity of the Vibram Sole…so advise against those but not Lakes in general
I am a big fan of the Lake MX 168 shoe. It is available in a 'wide' fit and a good option for those with wide feet. In the past I have ridden with:
•Mavic XA - great shoe, comfy but feet got very cold and possibly too much flex.•Shimano gor-tex (MT7) - good for cold but stay they waterlogged after river crossings and I found them too narrow for my wide feet.•Specialized recon 2.0 - gave me hotfoot but many people like this shoe as it has good toe flex which is good for hiking sections. Note the Recon 2.0 has better toebox flex than the recon 1.0 or 3.0•Fizik - Ergo lace - Good option and really liked these but they are hard to source in SA. Lace-up is an advantage for RASA as BOA's can break and velcro can sometimes come loose in grass and mud. Ergo-lace also comes in gor-tex option which is warm but also gets water-logged during river crossings
+1 for the lakes. I used these and had no issues, although they wouldnt survive a second RASA:). Shoes are a critical consideration having now done this thing. Being able to walk comfortably in robust shoes that can take getting wet and dry a lot is critical.
Used shimano xm7 for 2.9 RASAs. moved to shimano mt7 for 2022 RASA due to lack of availability of xm7. Both are gore tex but mt7 were a bit tighter. Would go back to xm7 if I could get them

Does anyone have experience of the Shimano MT3 for a summer RASA? https://www.olympiccycles.co.za/product/shoe-shimano-mt301sl-black-46/ - they are fairly low in Shimano's range but seem well suited to the walking at least, and are lace-up.
