Marius Opperman

Traversing the Freedom Challenge is an enriching experience that among other things brings you into contact with a wide variety of people. In 2007 after a particularly harrowing day of riding through the snow I stumbled through the front door of Elandsberg farm and met Marius and Margaret Opperman.

Farming in the Karoo is a hard job and you need to be tough. In spite of this I was met with warmth and kindness. Nothing was too much trouble. My memory of Marius was his attentive yet not overbearing presence. He was kind and warm and the troubles of the day behind melted in his presence. Sitting in front of a glowing fire and later around the dining room table I had a real sense of being home. In the years since as I navigate around Elandsberg and make my way toward the small farmhouse that nestles in its shadow I am reminded of that time in 2007 when I walked through the front door of his farmhouse as a stranger and Marius revived my spirit and extended a welcome that overshadowed the difficulties I had faced.

He is survived by his wife Magaret who continues to play a pivotal role in hosting a support station on the Freedom Trail - Mike Woolnough
