Christo Botha

The Freedom Challenge community has grown into a large family of participants and people who live along the trail. And, as with any extended family, there are a few individuals who loom larger than life. So it was with Christo Botha. Large of girth but larger of heart.

Many riders have told of a frosty, pre-dawn departure from Rhodes, riding through the cold of the Bokspruit and then the long climb up the Sterkspruit before rapidly descending down the Bottlnekspruit. Pursued by hunger from an inadequate breakfast and the loneliness that follows after the route into Rhodes, the road would flatten out and be followed by the avenue of white elephants and garden statues that lined the driveway of Chesney Wold. Appearing from the stone house would be the beaming, bearded presence of Christo welcoming them into his home. Inside waited a kitchen with a warm fire burning in the coal stove and a table groaning with food. Beyond a bar built to accommodate his expanding cap collection. For those lured into their home the next challenge was not to succumb completely to Christo and Minki’s wonderful hospitality and offers of yet more food, and to leave before 2.30pm in order to cross Kapokkraal and Kopshorn before night fell. Not all succeeded.

Christo was a substantial man. His passing leaves a substantial hole that serves as a reminder of the community that has grown around the Freedom Challenge - David Waddilove
